When you feel like giving up
How can you respond when you can hear your inner critic, loud and clear, pushing you to give up?
Give yourself permission to express your feelings. It is healthy to express these emotions of frustration, anger and defeat; to get them out of our system instead of internalising them.
Have a safe place to land. Know who your cheer squad is. They need to be people who know you well enough to know that sometimes you need cheering on or cheering up and other times, you just need to be heard, nothing more.
Acknowledge that even with your feelings of discomfort, at the end of the day you are closer to your goals. It may not feel that way. It may feel like all you’ve done is wallowed, kicked and screamed on the inside. And now you're just sitting there, feeling useless and paralysed by your need to achieve perfection. But, simply allowing yourself to process those emotions, is an important step.
You’ll be better placed to pick up where you left off and keep going, rather than procrastinating with your feelings and having to process them at a later stage. And sometimes, it’s the simple things that are most helpful to getting back on the bandwagon. Try a walk in the fresh air or taking a break to eat something. A good night's sleep will do wonders.
Realise that you don’t need to be in love with every process you go through. I find it very empowering to re-frame a process that feels never-ending in my mind, as having a beginning, a middle and an end. There is always a beginning, middle and end.
What are you in the middle of right now? What do you feel like giving up on?
